Preparing your Puppy for Grooming
Start young, go slow, build trust.
Handle Them Often (and Gently)
Getting your puppy used to grooming early in life can make a huge difference to how they respond to it as they grow. Even before they’re old enough for their first proper grooming appointment, there are lots of little things you can do at home to help them feel calm, confident, and ready when the time comes.
Introduce Brushing Early
Start with a soft brush and make it part of your daily or weekly routine- even if they don’t need much brushing yet. Keep sessions short and sweet, and stop while they’re still happy. This helps them learn that grooming isn’t scary or overwhelming.
Use Positive Reinforcement
Always reward calm behaviour during grooming practice. Use their favourite treats or toys o make it a fun and rewarding activity, not a chore. You’re building trust - and that’s the most important part.
Create a Calm Environment
If possible, introduce them to the sound of a hairdryer, electric toothbrush (or electric clippers from a safe distance) and running water in short bursts. This helps desensitise them to the kinds of sounds they’ll hear during a groom. Always go at their pace.
Keep Their First Groom Short & Sweet
When they’re old enough for their first proper grooming appointment (usually around 12-16 weeks, depending on vaccinations and vet advice), I offer puppy intro sessions designed to be short, gentle, and all about building confidence - not achieving a perfect haircut.
When to Book
Your puppy’s first grooming session should happen soon after their first vaccinations are complete. Even if they don’t need a full groom yet, a gentle introductory session is a great way to start the grooming journey on the right paw.
